Temple-Wilton Community Farm
Location: Wilton, NH
Area Protected: 79 Acres
Easement Partners: Town of Wilton
Temple-Wilton Community Farm (TWCF) is located among the rolling hills of southern New Hampshire where the Monadnock Plateau meets the rugged coastal plains, on land that was inhabited and shaped by Pennacook bands of the Abenaki Nation for centuries prior to colonization and settlement of the "New World". Started in 1986 with the convergence of three farmers and a community of 35 households, TWCF is one of the longest standing Community Supported Agriculture and Biodynamic farms in New England.
The Place
Over the course of two decades, with the help of the federal Farm and Ranchland Protection Program, the NH Land & Community Heritage Investment Program, the Town of Wilton, Living Lands Trust, and various other organizations and individuals, the farm was secured and TWCF took form. TWCF is truly a collaborative and collective effort and Living Lands Trust is honored to have a role in this innovative effort. Today, TWCF has roughly 100 members and provides a broad range of products through its CSA and farm store, such as: an array of vegetables and herbs, eggs and dairy, including raw milk and artisan cheeses and yogurt produced by Abbott Hill Creamery. All unprocessed farm produce (vegetables and milk) is available to members free of charge once the proposed budget is met through annual pledges that are paid over the course of the given year. This enables TWCF to decouple the food produced from it “market value.” Pledges are based on the ability to pay, rather than on the amount of food to be taken; each member household is free to take as much food as is needed, depending on availability.
